Pat, Pat, Pat

by Janis Gaines

Pat, pat, pat
Ouch, I thought,
That hurts my back.

Pat, pat, pat
Really more of a slap,
Your hand on my back.

Pat, pat, pat
Just a quick embrace,
Only a moment’s attack.

Pat, pat, pat
I smiled with the pain.
How harmless is that?

Pat, pat, pat
One day I said, “Ouch,
That hurts my back.”

Pat, pat, pat
You rolled your eyes.
I was taken aback.

Pat, pat, pat
Such a small thing
Caused such a large crack.

Pat, pat, pat
Looking for love
In a gap full of lack

Pat, pat, pat
Only a memory now
That can’t fight back.

Pat, pat, pat
