by Janis Gaines

Cut back
Down to the root;
All but left for dead,
Yet something stirs
Underneath the dirt —
Sweet secret of the cosmos.

And I swear I did a double take this morning
To see a bright green sprig
Of new growth
Alive after all that.

Who knew
Just one little leaf
Could say so much,
Whispering things like
“I’m not dead.”

The sun and the earth
Still have their magic,
And the rainmakers
Do their dance.

So I’m learning not to flinch so much
When I see the ax man coming.
