In Silence

by Janis Gaines

I bowed my head in silence
To listen but nothing was heard
The clock had stopped ticking
A pause
And then the sounds became distinct
All distractions and noise in my ear
Crescendoing cacophony of fake praise
And dead dreams
Coming back to haunt me
Like Scrooge, my nightmares live
And taunt me to my face
Time won’t erase the waste
Of words set aside to die
Tick, tick
Unfulfilled and broken
Abandoned and numb
My voice, my heart
