by Janis Gaines

I saw the picture of your son
On the back of your car
“In Memory of…”
He died in the war
I didn’t catch his name
But I was arrested all the same
I just know that if it were my son
I would scream a scream to rattle the stars
And unhinge all my dreams
My son, who is a living part of me
My hope, my posterity
Ma’am, I don’t understand
How you can drive or breathe
And I wept at the red light
In homage to your son
