by Janis Gaines

My eyes were closed
I breathed in slowly and deep
Filling my lungs completely
With all they were meant to hold
Drawing in the invisible life around me
And time stood still
Rapt in a moment of creation mysteries and grace
Testing the spirits even
The demarcation of life and death
Til its purpose was spent
And the dead air was forced from my lungs
In one great WHOOSH
And as much as I needed it to end
I knew I would need to breathe again
And my eyes were opened
As I drew my next breath
